Today, artists and designers are pursuing work and creative expression that pushes the boundaries of traditional disciplines requiring interdisciplinary collaborations, the mastery of new technologies, and intensive research to unearth new solutions to practical and aesthetic problems. Join us for a symposium that examines the process of design through both collected objects and discussions.

Drexel’s Westphal College of Media Arts & Design is a leading design and applied art school, ranked the fifth best applied art and design school in the nation by College Factual and with top ranked programs in Fashion Design, Interior Design and Architecture, Digital Media, and Product Design. The Westphal College Master’s program in Design Research draws upon the strengths of an outstanding faculty, superb facilities, and an extensive ongoing research portfolio. We invite you to learn more about Design Research at a free to the public symposium on Friday, October 13th being presented as part of this year’s DesignPhiladelphia Festival.

“Design Research is an exciting field, with many possibilities and a range of practices, especially in Drexel’s dynamic urban environment. The Design Research Symposium will highlight the diverse work of Drexel design researchers, and their collaborators. Attendees will have the opportunity to examine the impact of this type of work on research in technology, health and the built environment and consider where their own interests might fit into this exciting field.”

Designing organizations: Human-centered design as a tool for organizational innovation

Econsult Solutions

Econsult Solutions

This event is organized and presented by Econsult Solutions, Inc.

Submitted to the pressures of their constantly changing environment, organizations are left with the hard task of having to adapt rapidly. Agility and innovation have become priorities across organizations of all kinds who now turn to design thinking as a tool to unlock organizational change. With its multi-stepped approach to solving complex problems, the design thinking process is a helpful lens to understand organizational development. In addition to being a catalyst for creativity and integrative approaches, design thinking challenges employees to be self-reflective in the ways that they cultivate meaningful connections to customers.

How can an organization use the design thinking framework to not only generate innovative ideas but change the organizational culture at large? How is design thinking currently being used by organizations? How can you create a collaborative problem-solving culture within your organization?

Come with an example of one of your own organizational challenges, and be prepared to test out 1 or 2 of these ideas. Learn from creative problem solvers how to apply design thinking techniques to organizational challenges.

Moderated by Natalie Nixon, design strategist and head of Figure 8 Thinking, and presented in partnership with Econsult Solutions.

Tyler Hays: The Art of Making Everything

entry-180-tyler_hays[1].jpg

This event is organized and presented by Collab at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Center for Architecture and Design.

Collab at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Center for Architecture + Design invite you to meet Tyler Hays, founder of BDDW. A visionary designer and 21st century craft entrepreneur, Tyler has won accolades from the design community and beyond for his ability to marry the fine craftsmanship of a luxury atelier with an appealingly rustic American aesthetic that appeals to a wide (but discerning) audience. He has been described in the pages of the New York Times as an “obsessive, eccentric master craftsman,” and Tyler’s Philadelphia studio produces furniture, ceramics, clothing, beer, one-of-a-kind turntables and other objects for his high-end Milan and Soho showrooms, BDDW and M.Crow.

At this special DesignPhiladelphia event, Tyler will talk about his career as a painter, sculptor, designer and maker of many things, who is forging a sophisticated aesthetic while working in a homegrown, vernacular style.

Guests will then be invited to embark on a treasure hunt in the Museum’s 17th and 18th century decorative arts galleries, where they will seek and find some of Tyler’s pieces temporarily positioned within the elegant sweep of design history.

The onset of do-it-yourself and home improvement network programs have mesmerized millions through their television screens. The dramatic before and after transformations are undeniably captivating, but the entertainment value of these shows have effectively distilled the architectural process into one hour episodes with a distorted sense of reality. This presentation and exhibit will provide insight on what it really takes to bring a project into fruition when working with Architects, while highlighting the roles and value that they offer to the design process by revealing their academic and professional journeys. Light refreshments will be provided.
