Closing Reception and Discussion on Ending Hunger in Philadelphia

MEDstudio@JEFF’s Graphic Medicine program explores how visual narratives communicate complex ideas, transcending verbal language to help build better communication for all. This first installment of MEDstudio’s Graphic Medicine with artist Tom Judd, Philabundance and Mural Arts Philadelphia investigates the way mural-making can help us understand hunger in the Delaware Valley—a problem that affects so many yet remains largely invisible and misunderstood.

View Tom Judd’s An Apple a Day mural, and discuss finding potential solutions to Ending Hunger in Philadelphia.

Proudly serving refreshments by Philabundance Community Kitchen.

This event is organized and presented by Tongue & Groove Spontaneous Theater.

Improvisers know that creating something out of nothing is a process of discovery, not invention.
Being Present. Being open to outcome. Releasing internal scripts.  Being comfortable in the unknown. Accepting change. Flexibility in the face of disruption. Listening.
These are the skills of the improviser.  And they can be learned and applied to every aspect of work and life.

Come play in the world of improv and practice these skills! The workshop is designed to create a safe, comfortable environment in which you can release fear and explore.  No one is singled out — the activities are collaborative and supportive.  This is not about performing — it’s about learning the skills that performers use, and applying them to your own needs.  No experience necessary; Design Thinkers, Artists, and the Improv-curious are all encouraged to play.

This event is linked to Tongue & Groove's performance 'BY DESIGN.' Combine both the workshop and a performance for only $25! Purchase a ticket to the show and receive a discount code to use when purchasing the workshop.

This workshop is taught by Tongue & Groove Spontaneous Theater’s Artistic Director Bobbi Block; Tongue & Groove performs BY DESIGN on Oct 13 @ 8pm and Oct 14 @ 4pm: $18.   Buy both a show and the workshop together:  $25

Nicholas Kripal

Nicholas Kripal

This event is organized and presented by InLiquid Art + Design and Park Towne Place.

Park Towne Place and InLiquid present "Configuration," an exhibition of ceramic sculptures by Nicholas Kripal. Kripal’s collection of tightly conceptual sculptures contain layers of meaning expressed elegantly in seemingly simple and minimalist form. Throughout his career, Kripal was inspired by tools and objects from everyday life, such as hand tools and baking molds. His sculptures combined these forms into symmetrical clusters and stacks, altering color, and shifting scale. The objects are rich in association, and are transformed by the change. In creating artwork from common forms, Kripal celebrated humble handywork, elevating the ordinary into something to be revered. "Configuration" displays a collection of these artworks, which together tell a story of a time and place through objects.

Reception for Configuration                                                                                        @ North Tower Gallery, Park Towne Place                                                                  Saturday, October 14, 5:30 - 8pm

Gallery Talk, 6:30pm: Jeffrey Mongrain, distinguished professor & head of ceramics/MFA sculpture at Hunter College and long-time collaborator and friend of Nicholas Kripal, will speak in depth about Kripal’s artwork and practice.

The reception for Configuration will be preceded by an afternoon of festivities from 1-8pm with activities by The Clay Studio, InLiquid, Schuylkill Banks, and more on the Great Lawn at ParkTowne Place Museum District Residences. There will be claymation and painting workshops, a biergarten and food trucks, and riverboat tours of the Schuylkill. This is a Closing Reception for DesignPhiladelphia. RSVP at InLiquid.org

Full List of Activities:

Guest DJ Kevin Kong, 1 - 5pm, Lawn: DJ Kong is a well versed multi-genre DJ with a strong connection to the dance floor. He’ll be cranking out tunes for the festivities on the lawn all afternoon.

Claymation Workshop, 1 - 3pm, Lawn: Guests will work with professionals from The Clay Studio to create and animate clay characters using the art of stop motion. After the event videos will be edited and posted to YouTube.

Pint Painting, 1 - 4pm, Lawn: In a second activity on the lawn, participants will customize pint glasses by painting their own designs. Materials will be provided and InLiquid Member Scott Schultheis will lead the workshop, providing instruction along the way.

Architectural Photography Workshop at Christ Church

Architectural Photography Workshop at Christ Church

Tom Crane Photography

Tom Crane Photography

This event is organized and presented by Institute of Classical Architecture & Art.

Learn how best to digitally capture the impressive Georgian architecture at Christ Church, where George Washington, Betsy Ross and Benjamin Franklin were regular parishioners. This hands-on workshop will be led by Tom Crane, Philadelphia’s leading architectural photographer. Both general instruction and individual feedback will be included, as well as a brief presentation about post-production methods by Benjamin Riley.

Christ Church is known as “The Nation’s Church” due to its impressive roster of Revolutionary parishioners. The church was founded in 1695 and the current Georgian style structure dates to 1727. Christ Church includes a steeple designed by Robert Smith and financed by a lottery organized by Benjamin Franklin, an original chandelier in use since installation in 1740, and the baptismal font in which William Penn was baptized among other treasures waiting to be captured in photographs.

Christ Church has had many great organs in its history, including the mid 1830s organ designed by Henry Erben and installed in the West Gallery. Christ Church is currently replacing this instrument and C.B. Fisk will be installing a mechanical action organ into the restored Erben organ case.  Fisk is working with Christ Church, John Milner Architects and other consultants to install this new instrument, which evokes organs of the past and will beautifully and rightly serve the liturgy in our time and the future. Christopher Miller AIA, Principal at John Milner Architects, will describe the project.

Tom Crane’s love of architectural photography began when he was a Peace Corps volunteer fascinated by the designs embedded into mud buildings in northern Nigerian villages. Upon returning to the United States he apprenticed with Ezra Stoller, the “grandfather of architectural photography”. Crane has been based in Philadelphia since 1971, and his independent architectural and interior photography practice has documented several regional projects. His studio has been located in a restored barn in Bryn Mawr for the past 30 years. Crane is currently a board member of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art.

The decorative-plasterwork atelier Wells Vissar makes some of the most convincing faux marble in the design world. ly a well-trained eye could identify the tops of two English Palladian tables in New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art as contemporary faux marble. Or discern that an ornamental fireplace at Tavern on the Green restaurant in Manhattan isn’t an 1870 original. The seemingly timeworn creations are the handiwork of Wells Vissar, a Philadelphia decorative-plasterwork atelier catering to designers and homeowners with a taste for fine finishes. “Clients don’t necessarily hire us for a specific technique,” says studio cofounder Kathleen Vissar, who’s crafted everything from pilasters and arches for a Georgian-style estate to ceiling medallions for an urban hotel. “They want an old-world effect but don’t know how to achieve it.”
