The decorative-plasterwork atelier Wells Vissar makes some of the most convincing faux marble in the design world. ly a well-trained eye could identify the tops of two English Palladian tables in New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art as contemporary faux marble. Or discern that an ornamental fireplace at Tavern on the Green restaurant in Manhattan isn’t an 1870 original. The seemingly timeworn creations are the handiwork of Wells Vissar, a Philadelphia decorative-plasterwork atelier catering to designers and homeowners with a taste for fine finishes. “Clients don’t necessarily hire us for a specific technique,” says studio cofounder Kathleen Vissar, who’s crafted everything from pilasters and arches for a Georgian-style estate to ceiling medallions for an urban hotel. “They want an old-world effect but don’t know how to achieve it.”

The Nesting House started in 2010 as a natural extension of the lives of the two women who opened the store. As mothers of small children living in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, Jennifer Kinka and Meredith Jacoby sympathized with local consumers’ desires to find quality retail for themselves and their children without breaking budgets, harming the environment or taking advantage of the people behind the products they are purchasing. In January of 2013, The Nesting House become a true “mom and pop” venture as Jennifer’s husband, Christopher, came in to replace the departing Meredith.

Since then, Jen and Chris, with the help of a very dedicated staff, have worked to continue this vision and expand it further. This expansion has consisted of significantly increasing the new retail offerings at the Mount Airy store, opening of a second store in Collingswood, NJ, and developing a more thorough, informative and current website experience for its customers. The most recent expansion came in the form of a 3rd location in the summer of 2015, located in the West Philadelphia section of the city. 

Stop by to learn what local, small businesses are creating in workshops, studios, and building sites throughout Philadelphia. Works by architectural photographers, woodworkers, architects, metal workers, and more will be on display. philafad was started as a networking organization for creatives; come prepared to network with philafad’s group of makers.
